Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) conversations recently have become prominent in classical organizations. In the last five years, the National Latin Exam has embraced a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens transforming how the NLE writes and proofreads exams. Through multiple initiatives, the NLE has sought to reflect and grow to produce exams that affirm the identities of students taking the exams. By sharing past mistakes in the choice of passages as well as passages now discarded due to DEI concerns, the NLE offers the teaching community material and opportunities for courageous classroom conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion. This page contains these passages with guiding questions as resources for teachers and students. In addition, this page has the NLE's DEI Statement, which was shared in 2019 and still applies today. We hope eventually to add other DEI resources to this page.
